The Craftsman…

When studying the intricacies of Anthony’s fabric collages it is important to note the attention to detail that he demonstrates. He has worked painstakingly to select fabrics and details that would truly express and maintain the integrity of his message. Each of the different fabrics and accents are independently attached and hand-stitched by the artist to the background.

His technique is to paste, press, and lightly shellac each individual layer, then bind the front of a foam core backing to the back of the fabrics with a tailor’s thimble, securing it with hundreds of stitches. After treatment to the back and multiple pressings the foam core hardens and the project is complete. His respect for craftsmanship and longevity in art is what drives him to such thoroughness in is own works. Each piece can take anywhere from a month to a year or more to complete depending on the level of complexity.

War & Angels

“WAR & ANGELS” is the culmination of the opposing poles of virtue and vice clashing and struggling for supremacy within each of us; the wanting to live a moral and virtuous life battling against the want to thrill in the excitement of what is deemed by society as sin. It is the ultimate battle between Freud’s Super-ego and Id that Anthony Lilly so beautifully recreates with is art.
